Basic Trivia Night Rules You Should Know

Basic Trivia Night Rules You Should Know

Trivia night is always fun for friends, family, and coworkers to look forward to at the end of the week. However, setting a few basic ground rules does a lot to avoid unnecessary conflict in future games. You should know these basic trivia night rules to keep things casual and entertaining as the game’s host.

Players Only Answer on Their Turns

As the game master, it is important for you to set some simple guidelines for the contestant to avoid having to mediate the smaller aspects of the activity. It is important to clarify to the participants that only those who answer on their turn have the ability to gain points. Having gradual penalties for repeat offenders is a secondary measure to consider, but hopefully, it won’t be necessary. While some players get excited when they are involved in the game, it is important to prioritize the satisfaction of everyone rather than a single person.

Keep Stakes Low

It is a good idea to keep your game’s stakes low. Doing so helps prevent people from getting too emotionally invested in the game. No one likes missing out on something they want, and games like trivia always have a winner and a loser. The stakes for the end of the game shouldn’t be important enough to make people forget about the fun they are meant to have. Maintain a balance to keep the game enticing but not so much so that people lose sight of the event’s purpose.

Put Away the Phones

While cheating is not necessarily common, it is tempting when your players have the opportunity. For this reason, it is a good idea to let everyone know beforehand that the game is to be played without phones or additional resources. Making this rule clear at the beginning prevents people from taking issue with it. Doing so helps keep things running smoothly without disappointing those unaware of having to keep their hands off the cell for a little while.

The Quizmaster Has Authority

When all is said and done, it is necessary for people to understand that you, as the host, have the last say in disputes. Whether right or wrong, it’s good to have one person in charge of the final decision when it comes down to moving on with the game and settling any differences. This helps players avoid focusing on small technicalities for too long and emotionally detaches people from arguments.

The next time you want to put your trivia subscription to good use, remember that everyone is there to have fun for the next trivia night you decide to host. Keeping things clear and challenging is the best way to keep people involved and on their toes. If you know some basic trivia night rules, your next game night will surely be a hit.
