A Guide to Organizing a Trivia Night (Pub Quiz)

Trivia nights can be great fun and appeal to most age groups. They can add a great fun element to a party, because let’s face it, who doesn’t like to show off their knowledge and intelligence when they get the chance? However, trivia nights are not all about showing your friends how good you are at general knowledge, it is all about having fun with your friends and enjoying the night. People organize trivia nights in pubs for raising funds as well, so it can be a great idea for you to organize one the next time you plan a social gathering. So, how to organize a trivia night and make sure it is successful? Well, this article will guide you to arranging an impressive trivia night:

Step 1

First, you will need to plan the trivia night long before you actually plan to hold it. A trivia night is obviously no fun without friends and family, so you need to send out invites well in advance. However, before that, you will need to decide where you will hold the trivia night and when. Most trivia nights are not limited to family or friends and you can invite anyone to the pub quiz, which calls for advertising in public. You can set an entrance fee and prize money as well.

The time you choose for the trivia night should not only be convenient for you but for all the participants as well. If there are families involved, start the event early so it is over before midnight. Also, avoid holding a trivia night on weekdays since most people have to go to work the next day.

Step 2

Once you have made sure the venue you have picked is ideal for everyone, you need to set the questions and the format of the game. It is a good idea to hire a professional to help with the trivia, since they know how to put challenging questions together and make the night more interesting. However, if you decide to put the questions together yourself, make sure you do a good job and take the task seriously. The quality of the questions is vital in making the night more fun.

Hiring a Quizmaster for the event is a good idea too since you may not have the required experience to pull off the entire event perfectly. A Quizmaster ensures everything goes smoothly during the night and everyone has a good time.

Step 3

Make the night more pleasurable by adding a few flavor of themes and costumes. There is a vast choice of themes you can choose for a trivia night and the added colors and amusement will multiply the entertainment. Select a host who is vibrant and can shake the crowd when needed. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the person arranging the trivia night, so contact your friend or someone you know who can be a good host.

The ultimate objective of a trivia night is for everyone to have a blast. Arranging a trivia night may seem challenging at first, but get your crew together and with the help of the provided info, you can arrange a brilliant trivia night at the pub.

Great Trivia Night Team Names

Coming up with a catchy or fun trivia night team name ought to be one of your biggest priorities when getting your team together. There are hundreds of names you can choose from, so get your teammates together and start brainstorming and making a list. Then, narrow it down to just a few and take a vote.

What’s in a great trivia night team name?

Originality goes a long way. Sure, there are some awesome team names floating around the internet and there’s nothing saying you can’t jump on a great one and use it for your own team. On the other hand, originality is something to be proud of. Your name doesn’t necessarily have to do with quizzes or trivia; it can be as unique as you’d like.

Some people like funny names, some like to put a spin on phrases or sayings, and others like to be a bit crude (Or a lot crude!). As you and your teammates discuss possible names, see what factors are important to them in a team name. Do you want to be known for being humorous or smart as a whip? Do you want your name to reflect your love of trivia or your love of ladies, beer, or something else?

The more unique the name is, the better the chance that another team won’t have created the same team name. How to Market Your Trivia Event

When it comes to trivia nights, marketing your event should be a top priority. After all, if very few people come to your trivia night, the event won’t bring in much money. First impressions are important and can make or break your attempt at establishing your pub as the place to go when it comes to trivia nights. If people participate in a trivia night and enjoy it, they will likely come back and bring more of their friends with them. Organizing and marketing a successful trivia night is a sure way to acquire a large and loyal customer base.

Use social media

In order to market your trivia night, use as many social media outlets as possible. Sharing the event information via social media is one of the most efficient ways of spreading the word. Just about everyone uses social media in one form or another, so you really should make your plans public as soon as you decide to host a trivia night. Social media websites like Facebook remind users when events are nearing, therefore doing half the job for you. In addition to Facebook, advertise on Twitter and LinkedIn, and whatever other social media networks you are involved with.

Use posters

Posters are a time tested, old school marketing tool, but they still work. Have a poster created that gives the essential information about your trivia night. Be sure that it has a professional and fun look so that it catches the attention of others. Make sure you have posters up at your establishment at all times to let patrons know of the upcoming event. This will help spread the word and hype up the event significantly. Spread the posters around town too with friendly business owners who will allow you to put a poster on their windows or inside their establishment.

Create a killer hook

Make some kind of hook in order to attract people to the trivia event at your establishment. You can organize a big jackpot or offer some sort of an attractive prize. It doesn't have to be expensive. Brainstorm and be creative.  Have a trophy made.  A good old money prize is always certain to do the trick too, as most people love money.

Advertise in the newspaper

Don't forget local newspapers. It is true that not as many people read regular newspapers these days but they are still enjoyed by a large chunk of the population. Ads are usually fairly affordable, which is helpful.  Make sure to note the event date and time in the ad. If you’re not great at writing content, have someone write it for you. You can also let your local radio station know about the event and ask them to give you a shout out about the event.

Have a great quizmaster

Once you get the ball rolling, make sure to entice people to come back. The best way to do this is to have a funny and charismatic quizmaster and provide great Trivia Night Questions. Spare no expense on the quizmaster, as it will be worth the investment when patrons keep coming back and bringing friends. There are plenty of people out there who can help you get the ball rolling. If you have a waitress or waiter, or a hostess with great people skills, you might consider giving them a chance to host a trivia night, and see how they do.  Once you get acquainted with the basics of organizing a trivia night, you will be able to experiment and try out different things.

Being known as the place to go for trivia nights is very good for business. Trivia nights are best suited for week days, which makes them perfect for filling up what is usually a slow day at the bar or establishment. If you’re having a trivia night as a fundraiser, weekends or weekday evenings work well too. If you organize a successful trivia night, people will surely start coming regularly and bring friends too.  Quizzes are perfect for both starter businesses and experienced business owners who want to create an additional source of income.

Give it some time and stay consistent. Lastly, get the word out by mouth, as word-of-mouth advertising is still one of the best ways to market an event.  For more tips and tricks, check out some of our other blog posts.

5 Tips to Winning Pub Quiz Night

If you have decided to participate in your local pub quiz night it is time to get your game face on and make sure you are well prepared to face the real questions with your reputation on the line. Get ready for your victory lap using these five tips to help you win a pub quiz night:

Prepare

Think about the demographics and the questions that will be asked. From there study a multitude of questions varying in difficulty from easy to extremely difficult. You can even suss out the pub and see what is happening before you decide to participate. You will get a feel for the questions, the atmosphere and even the timing so you are psyched to get in there and win.

Pick a Prize Winning Team

If you are in it to win it then you have to be serious about how you are going to grab that prize. Get together a group of family and friends who you can work well with and be sure to think about their strengths and weaknesses. You don't want to end up with a team who knows all about 90's music but nothing of current events. Also make sure you have a good relationship. You don't want to end a 10 year friendship because someone doesn't know the lead singer from Duran Duran.

Be Prompt

When you suss out a pub night take a look as to where all of the action is; you don't want to end up at the table in the back barely hearing any of the questions. Be sure to get there early before the quiz night starts so you can get the best seat in the house.

Fuel

You'll need your energy if you're going to win the game, so be sure to indulge in a little pub food whether it be nachos or mozzarella sticks. If you're really interested in winning take it easy when consuming alcohol. A lot of your competition will be drinking so save the drinks for your victory toast.

Whether you win or lose you've already won: Sure you may be competitive, and you may have not won the game, but you had a great evening with friends taking part in the game.

It just takes a bit of prep to be ready to enjoy your first pub quiz night win or lose.
