How to Host a Quiz Night

How to Turn Your Remote Trivia Night Into a Weekly League

How to Turn Your Remote Trivia Night Into a Weekly League

We recently published a blog post on how to host a remote Trivia Night using Zoom. It's been very popular, and readers love the fact that they can play trivia remotely with their friends and family. Many have inquired about setting up a weekly event, so we thought we’d put together a blog detailing the best way to go about doing that. This blog is a step-by-step guide including how to find players, where to get your trivia, setting up the scoring (BONUS - LEAGUE SCORING SYSTEM INCLUDED), and the prizes.

1. Finding Players/Teams

You may already be running a trivia night with your friends/family/co-workers, and you can skip this section if you are. If not, here are some ideas on how to reach out, including:

1. Facebook. Ping your friends on Facebook, or post something on your wall looking for players. People are starved for entertainment right now, especially the kind that involves real people, so you may be surprised at how many people will want to play. The players I host currently tell me that quiz night is the highlight of their week.

2. Email your family/friends looking for players.

3. If you were running your trivia at a bar, reach out to the players. We have many customers running "Virtual" trivia nights to stay engaged, and in some cases charging money. One of our customers recently said "I am running a weekly virtual trivia night and charging a small fee for players to play. I am using the funds to help out my wait staff during this difficult time...".

Bottom line: There are MANY people out there looking for this type of entertainment. It's a way to connect and spend time with friends and family. Most importantly, it gives people some time to take their minds off the current situation.

2. Getting Great Trivia

On your quest for trivia, try to keep in mind that well written, thoroughly fact checked questions with all levels of difficulty represented, is key to ensuring everyone participating will be engaged and have fun. Too many hard questions, and players will get discouraged and not want to play. Too many easy questions, and the players will be bored. Striking a perfect balance is KEY.

We wrote a blog post about how to write great trivia night categories which should help, or you can purchase one of our perfectly balanced quizzes.

All our quizzes have been written by our team of quiz writers (Including a 2-time Jeopardy champion) and through 4 levels of fact checking, so you can be sure you are getting entertaining, and accurate questions and categories.

We suggest having some themed quiz nights to make it more fun. Try out a 1980s trivia night, or a 1990s trivia night. You can even ask the players to dress up from that era. Provide extra points for creativity.

Some other theme ideas:

  • 1970s
  • Movie Trivia
  • TV Trivia
  • Sports Trivia

3. Set Up the League Scoring System

We've recently adapted our Automated Scoring System (Excel) into a League Scoring System that automatically updates the teams and positions each week.

You can grab a free copy of the scoring system here

How it works:

Most of the Excel "magic" works from the first tab "Week 1". - Make sure the Team Names are entered here, and the other tabs will fill in automatically.

For the most part, it works the same as the automated scoring system, but with added tabs for the different weeks, and a "results" tab.

At the end of each week, you will see the following:

All scores are recorded and sorted automatically. As you see from this sheet, the "Know it Ales" team won the week with 128 points. If you click on the "Results" tab, you will see the following:

Scores are automatically added on this tab, and it will be keeping track of each week. Let's move to the end of the 4 weeks.

As you can see from the image, E-MC Hammer ended up winning at the end of the 4 weeks with 470 points and they were automatically moved up to the top of the scoring.

If you have more (or less) than 8 teams, or want to run it for more (or less) than 4 weeks, the sheet can be adjusted accordingly.

4. Prizes

Prizes are not necessary, but it adds an element to the game. People are competitive by nature, and a prize makes it more fun, and adds to the amount of trash talking involved after the tournament is over.

Here are some ideas for prizes:

1. Cash. Everyone chips in $5 per week and the winning team gets all the loot, or even better, donate half of it to your local food bank.

2. A trophy.

3. Winner gets dinner paid for by the losers once people can go out again.

4. Provide weekly prizes as well as overall prizes so people who join after it has already started still have a chance to win something.

5. Gift cards to your local pub/restaurant, which can be used once everything goes back to normal. This will help those businesses who have been hurt by the recent shutdown.

Conclusion

Starting a weekly trivia league is a great way to keep people engaged, take their minds off the current situation and bring people together (remotely) at a time when people are craving meaningful human interaction. Happy quizzing everyone!
